It is an odd thing when you can ask people who claim to be believers and have supposedly been saved for years, what they were saved from, and get little or no response. How can people proclaim for years that they are saved, and yet never have any idea at all what they are saved from? Then if they do have some idea, they cannot back it up with even one plain Scripture. Well my dear brothers and sisters I am going to answer this question with the word of the Living God. You need to know the answer because it is important to know why you believe and what you believe.
Most people think that being saved means that you are saved from eternal damnation in hell, but that is not the case. Now do not misunderstand me, being born-again does save you from hell, but hell is not what we have been saved from. Hell is not the problem, sin is. It is sin that sends you to hell, contrary to what the false teachers believe.
How can we be saved from hell in this life? We don't go to hell in this life. Hell is only the punishment for the problem of sin. So next time a sinner asks you what it means to be saved don't tell them that you are saved from hell, that is not what they need to hear. They need to hear of the power of the gospel for this life, not just the life to come!
Matthew 1:21
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
This is the reason why the word of Life was made manifest in the flesh. He came to save His people from their sins, not from hell, because if you are not free from sin then you surely cannot be free from sin's punishment, hell.
Acts 4:12
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Acts 10:43
43 To him [Jesus] give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
Romans 10:13
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Acts 2:21
21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Luke 7:48-50
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that can forgiveth sins also?
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
Ephesians 2:8-10
8 For grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
We do not need salvation from hell, rather we need salvation from the root of all our problems which is sin. Many "get saved", or so they think, to escape hell fire. Escaping hell is a good reason to be saved, but it is not the reason why salvation is offered to mankind. So many are deceived into believing that they have fire insurance from hell and a license to sin. They will be ashamed in eternity because they have neglected so great a salvation (Hebrews 2:3), and they will find that their fire insurance was canceled because of sin, and their man given license to sin was damning to their eternal souls.
Do not sow to the flesh, but sow to the Spirit (Galatians 6:8)! If you do not know if something is a sin, then do not do it! If you even question the godliness of a action do not do it! The Lord is "able also to save them to the uttermost that come to God by him" (Hebrews 7:25). Let Him truly save you and free you from sin, which was the reason for His death, burial, and resurrection from the dead.
John 8:31-32
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
You may wonder what Jesus was saying that the truth would free us from. The Jews that He was speaking to wondered the same thing, and He told them what they were bound to and serving, and that they could be free from it.
John 8:33-36
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
The bondage that they and many today are under in sin. You cannot serve sin and God. Jesus even went on to tell them, "Ye are of your father the devil..." (John 8:44). Do not be one of those who believes in Jesus like these Jews did (v.31), but still lives in sin. My friend "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other..." (Matthew 6:24). Do you want Jesus to free you from your sins, or do you want to have pleasure for a season, and spend eternity in hell. Men may tell you that your sins will not keep you out of heaven, but God will tell you they will, and unless you repent He will say to you, "depart from me, ye that work iniquity" (Matthew 7:23). Do not put your eternal destiny in the hands of a money loving, sinful, wicked minister telling you that once you are saved, you are always saved. Such a teaching is a mockery to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and is damning the souls of countless millions. Do not be one of those damned because you knew the truth and held to "the truth in unrighteousness" (Romans 1:18).
