13 Signs That You Are A Backslider

13 SIGNS THAT YOU ARE A BACKSLIDER

By Ryan Hicks

Many people today have been saved from sin by the Lord Jesus Christ and have been truly born-again, but they have backslidden from the Lord. Most ministers are not dealing with the backsliders in a Biblical way. They are telling them heresy like, "Well, once you are saved you are always saved," which is nothing more than telling the backslider that God is alright with their backsliding from Him. They say things like, "Well, just start giving more, because that will prove your faithfulness to God," which is saying nothing more than "buy off God!" Yet, they are not doing the Biblical action of trying to restore a fallen brother or sister (Galatians 6:1).

So for those of you that do not know some of the common sense things that would tell you that you are a backslider please read the "Signs of A Backslider" below.

  1. You are not going forward in the Lord.
  2. You were closer to the Lord before.
  3. The Bible no longer excites you or brings you blessing.
  4. You pray only to get something from God and do not worship the Lord.
  5. You do not pray at all.
  6. Worldly pleasures such as TV, radio, books, sports, dancing, etc. are more enjoyable to you than reading the Bible, praying, going to church, witnessing, etc.
  7. Committing sin.
  8. You ignore the conviction of the Holy Spirit when He convicts you in certain areas.
  9. Your desire to grow in holiness is weak or dying.
  10. Your love for God is stale and you are no longer full of joy and power.
  11. You have no desire for bettering the kingdom of God or encouraging fellow believers.
  12. You start to have more in common with unbelievers and apostates than believers.
  13. You find yourself at times mocking the word of God in order to commit sin.

All of these things are signs of a backslider. If even one of them applies to you then you need to search your heart and determine if you have ever truly been saved and if so then you need to repent and come back to the Lord (Proverbs 28:13; James 5:19-20; 1 John 1:9). The Scriptures say, "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?" (2 Corinthians 13:5).

Remember the words of the Lord Jesus Christ:

Luke 13:3, 5
3, 5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

If any of the signs fit then I strongly urge you to repent and be restored to the faith. You can contact me personally if you need help being restored to the faith of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!
