The Effect Of Righteousness

THE EFFECT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

By Ryan Hicks

Isaiah 32:17
17   And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

I was driving along in my car listening to the audio Bible when this verse struck me. It was so simple, and yet so profound. This is a verse that many have glossed over it because it applies to the Millennium and have thus failed to grasp the great truths it contains.

No, this does not apply to our current dispensation, but its truths are age abiding. The truths of this verse span all dispensations and ages, and get down to the root issues at hand for the believer: the work of righteousness and the effect of righteousness.

And the work of righteousness shall be peace. Not only will this be true in the Millennium, but it is true right now. Hebrews 12:14 says, "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord." Peace, holiness, and righteousness all go hand-in-hand. If you walk in righteousness and holiness you will no doubt work out peace and follow it.

This working of peace brings you to the effect of that righteousness: quietness and assurance for ever. We can bless God exceedingly for this truth, for it reveals the grandest wisdom and grace of God in redeeming man that deserved nothing but to burn in the lowest hell. God does not demand righteousness simply for people to obey Him, but also because it and it alone has the effect of quietness and assurance for ever. Sin surely never brings quietness and assurance. Rather it brings derision, violence, death, confusion, misery, doubt, ungodly fear, cowardance, and all such evil effects.

As we meditate on this and all Scripture (Psalms 1:2), let us always work righteousness and refuse the very thought of sin.
